A Brief History of Triangle Fraternity at UNL
In the fall of 1906 four civil engineering students at the University of Illinois began planning and organizing a club of like-minded engineers. This grew to the 16 founders of Triangle Fraternity by the time it was legally incorporated on April 15, 1907. They chose Triangle as a name rather than Greek letters because the shape is used in most structures due to it's strength and stability. Think truss bridges or rafters. Growth was steadily upward with 20 chapters by 1961.
In January 1962 a group of students formed the Nebraska Colony of Triangle. We became a chapter in 1963 and rented a house off-campus. In 1967 we moved into a new university-owned 62-man house near Schramm Hall. The first two years were great and the total membership grew to 90 brothers. From 1969 to the mid 70s Triangle like many other fraternities struggled with membership numbers because of changing societal views of fraternities. There were some bright spots at this time though. The 1971 E-Week committee always met at the Triangle house; most of the committee were Triangles. After 1977 the house was usually full for the next 24 years.
In 2002, due to reconfiguration of city streets, UNL abruptly evicted us from our longtime chapter home. Within months our house and two others were demolished and became a parking lot. Antelope Valley Parkway now passes through our old front yard.
Within months Triangle purchased a 66-man capacity house from Kappa Sigma at 519 N. 16th St., in June 2003 and our members had a new chapter home right there in the heart of Greek Row. A few years later, Triangle rented out the third floor to AXΩ Sorority for a semester while their house was being remodeled. This spoke well of our reputation as gentlemen and indeed it worked smoothly. Triangle later decided to rent out the house to another fraternity. In 2017 a nearly $100,000 major refurbishment project was undertaken. Our members have lived in the house since 2018. In 2020 and 2021 COVID had a major effect campus life and Greek recruitment as a whole. Membership numbers have been slowly and steadily increased. The world is getting back to normal and we look forward to many more decades of growth and brotherhood here in our new chapter home.
